5 Fantasy football trades to make before Week 2

Although it wasn't a great week for many stars, Week 1 gave us a lot of information on how we can improve our fantasy football rosters going forward.

The Trevor Lawrence-Calvin Ridley connection is probably the dominant fantasy story coming out of Jacksonville right now, but the Jaguars receiver more people need to be talking about is Zay Jones. The former Bills and Raiders pass catcher broke out in a big way in 2022, parlaying 121 targets into 82 catches, 823 yards, and five scores. In 2023, he's on track to replicate that success.

Aside from absolutely dunking on Colts corner Darrell Baker Jr. for a touchdown in the corner of the end zone, Jones played like his usual reliable self. The 28-year-old was expected to be a fantasy afterthought with Christian Kirk and now Ridley in the fold, but it seems to be Kirk who was left in the dust.

Jones owned a 23 percent target share in Week 1, trailing only Ridley's 35 percent. Kirk meanwhile had a meager six percent target share, and had a route participation of just 66 percent. For Jones, the latter figure was a whopping 94 percent. Kirk played 91 percent of his snaps in the slot, and ran at least 10 fewer routes than both Jones and Ridley.

Lastly, Jones saw the same number of third and fourth down targets as Ridley (29 percent), but actually led Jaguars receivers in average depth of target against the Colts. The 6-foot-2 veteran clearly has a strong rapport with Lawrence, and that will pay even further dividends in high-scoring shootouts like the one looming with the Kansas City Chiefs. Jones is a fringe fantasy WR3/Flex with a ton of upside based on matchup.
